Call for Papers

This year we invite you to join us in exploring the phenomenon that is crossing over. As students and researchers, we frequently come in contact with this process, be it thematic or technical in nature. The blurring of boundaries in any sense tends to affect not only the content we encounter, but also the ways in which we approach said content. How exactly does this concept reflect the concerns of any given work’s contemporary society? Just as importantly, how do we, each with our unique background, approach works that involve crossing over? We encourage students of romance studies and certainly of any relevant field to join us in answering these intriguingly interdisciplinary questions, with presentations concerning the following subtopics related to crossing over. These subtopics include but are not limited to:

Identity
Gender/gender roles
Nationality
Immigration/emigration/migration
Acculturation/assimilation
Crossing borders
Crossing oceans
Crossing landscapes
Cultural studies
Literary theory
Religious studies
Political studies
Crossing genres
Subversion/inversion (values/ roles)
Crossing generations
Crossing movements
Postmodernism
Crossing media
Transcendence
Transgression

We welcome proposals in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Catalan. Presentations will be limited to a reading time of 20 minutes (8-10 pages). Abstracts should follow the MLA style and be no more than 250 words; they must include a cover letter indicating the title, author’s name, affiliation, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. A selection of the presented articles will be published in the journal of literary criticism, Romance Review.

Deadline for submission:  January 15, 2011
